Lauren Baccari's healing legacy

The students, faculty and staff at the Medical University of South Carolina are saddened by the tragic loss of the late Lauren Baccari, a fourth year medical student who was just a few months short of her graduation from medical school.

Lauren was a compassionate student who wanted to pursue a residency in family medicine to provide much needed primary care to patients.

In her honor, the College of Medicine established the Lauren Baccari FamMed Fund to support activities of students interested in family medicine and those who are members of various family medicine interest groups.

The funds will provide the means to encourage students to pursue careers in primary care and allow them to attend seminars and conferences to foster their interests.

Individuals who wish to donate may do so through the MUSC Foundation at musc.edu/giving/com using the Lauren Baccari FamMed Fund link.

The Board of Trustees of the Medical University of South Carolina approved the posthumous awarding of the MD (medical doctor) degree to Lauren Baccari during the graduation ceremony on May 17, 2013, and a family member will accept it on her behalf.

Additionally, a seat will be draped at the Medical Student Oath Ceremony to honor her. Lauren will always be remembered as a compassionate student who wanted to serve her patients well, and the College of Medicine will keep her memory alive.
