Inmate back in custody after escape Thursday
An inmate is back in custody after escaping from a pre-release center in North Charleston Thursday night, according to the S.C. Department of Corrections.
Authorities first noticed Travis Hammet, 21, missing after a 9:30 p.m. roll call, spokesman Clark Newsom said.
A tip led investigators to search for Hammet at a Charleston home, Newsom said.
He was found hiding behind a pool house at Georgetown Apartments, 1476 Orange Grove Road, an incident report states.
Hammet was back in custody shortly after 2:30 a.m. and was transported to Lieber Correctional Institution this morning, Newsom said.
Hammet is being held on a second-degree burglary charge. He is eligible for parole in October of this year, and was expected to have served a maximum sentence in 2015, Department of Corrections records show.
Newsom said Hammet could face additional time because of Thursday’s escape.
