The Citadel 3, Winthrop 1

Jason Smith had a two-run single and Calvin Orth had an RBI double as The Citadel (8-5) beat Winthrop (3-9).

The Eagles’ only run of the game was unearned.

Smith broke a scoreless tie in the third inning, and The Citadel (8-5) went up 3-0 on Orth’s two-out hit in the fourth. Orth went 2 for 4 in his third straight game at first base with the absence of starter Bo Thompson (sore ankle).

Winthrop (3-9) scored its only run on a misplayed fly ball in the fifth. The Eagles threatened in the seventh with two runners on base with one out, but Zach Sherrill came in to get out of the jam.

Kevin Connell (1-0) got the win in relief for the Bulldogs, who got 31/3 innings of one-hit relief of starter Austin Livingston.

The Bulldogs next host Samford on Friday.
