Charleston Southern women fall to Longwood in first round of Big South tournament
CONWAY — No. 10 seed Charleston Southern was eliminated from the Big South tournament with a 70-63 loss to No. 7 seed Longwood on Wednesday.
Longwood (12-18) will face No. 2 seed Winthrop at noon Friday.
CSU closed the gap to 65-63 with 1:03 left when Shay Jones hit a 3-pointer, but Longwood scored the final five points on free throws by Crystal Smith.
Jones ended her career with 18 points, tying a career high with four 3-pointers, while fellow senior Lakeitha Alston had 18 points and 13 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Zhaquondalee’ Greer tied a career high with nine points for the Bucs (8-20).
Erin Neal led the Lancers with 22 points and six steals for Longwood, while Smith made 9 of 13 free throws.
The Buccaneers shot 35.2 percent (19 of 54) from the floor in the contest and held a 45-40 rebounding edge.
