Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office to crack down on illegal gambling
Berkeley County businesses have two weeks to get rid of any illegal sweepstakes and gaming machines or risk facing prosecution, Sheriff Wayne DeWitt announced today.
The Sheriff’s Office will collaborate with the State Law Enforcement Division and the S.C. Attorney General’s Office to locate and seize illegal machines, DeWitt said. Anyone caught with the machines will be charged, he said.
“The law is clear and there are no loopholes,” DeWitt said. “There have been over 1,200 of these machines seized around the state. If we find any in Berkeley County, they will be taken and those numbers will be added to the statewide total.”
