Hilton Head makes largest land buy in 20 years
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- The Town of Hilton Head Island is buying more than 100 acres on the resort island — the largest single parcel the town has acquired since it was incorporated 30 years ago.
It’s also the town’s largest land purchase since the 1990s.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports the town will spend $5 million to buy 102 acres in Port Royal Plantation. There will be no decision on what to do with the land for a couple of years.
The land is being bought from the Heritage Golf Group and includes much of a golf course the town will lease back until it decides how to use the property.
Mayor Drew Laughlin says the purchase is a great opportunity and will help meet future town needs.
