Goose Creek police: Man told women outside bar he was a marshal, had knife behind back

Edward D. Albright, 48, of Rickey Court in Goose Creek is charged with impersonating a law-enforcement officer and carrying a weapon.

A Goose Creek man told women outside a bar that he was a U.S. marshal, and then they spotted a knife behind his back, according to police who arrested him Sunday.

Edward D. Albright, 48, of Rickey Court is being held in the Berkeley County jail on charges of impersonating a law-enforcement officer and carrying a weapon.

Patrons at the K Lounge at 205 North Goose Creek Blvd. called Goose Creek Police about 12:50 p.m. saying a man was in the parking lot with a knife and claiming to be a U.S. marshal.

Here’s what the officers said happened, according to the incident report.

An officer arriving at the bar asked Albright about the knife, and he handed over a switchblade. The blade was 3.5 inches long, which put it in violation of a city ordinance.

Albright told officers he was a U.S. marshal investigating two stolen vehicles in the parking lot. He said he did not have his badge with him. When asked what field office he was working out of, he said he preferred to remain anonymous. Then he said his supervisor was a Mr. Jones but he couldn’t remember his phone number.

At that point, Albright was handcuffed.

Two women told officers that they were walking to their cars in the parking lot when Albright approached them and asked who owned their cars and claimed he was a U.S. marshal. The women asked to see his badge and he said he didn’t have it on him. Then he asked to see their registration papers. As one woman went to get her papers out of the car, the other woman spotted a knife behind Albright’s back. Both women went back inside the bar, locked the door and called police.

An officer called the local U.S. marshal field office and they asked Albright’s badge number. Albright said it was 714. The officer recognized it as the badge number of Sgt. Joe Friday on the TV series “Dragnet.” The field office said Albright was not one of their marshals.

Albright was arrested and taken to the jail. He was also given a trespass notice not to go near the K Lounge.
