Controlled burns likely for Charleston area this week
Local weather conditions are right for a spike in controlled burns, according to the S.C. Forestry Commission.
Much of the Lowcountry is between showers, making now a good time to go forward with controlled burns, spokesman Scott Hawkins said.
The Forestry Commission posts each day’s scheduled burns on its website, trees.sc.gov, Hawkins said. Burns are currently scheduled for Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties, according to the site.
“You get a good, clean burn this time of year,” Hawkins said. “If there’s been enough rain and the vegetation’s been able to dry out you get a low and slow type of burn.”
Controlled burns reduce the chances of wildfires and remove thick undergrowth, making travel and feeding easier for wildlife, according to the Forestry Commission.
