A Mount Pleasant Town Councilman was arrested and charged with DUI after running into the back of a car Saturday night.
Councilman John Burn, 52, of Brecon Road couldn’t walk straight or recite the alphabet during a field sobriety test, according to the incident report from Mount Pleasant police.
Burn was tested because he had bloodshot eyes, emitted a strong odor of alcohol and had wine stains on his shirt, according to the arresting officer.
Burn said he had a few drinks at an event at Alhambra Hall, according to the report.
Burn ran into the back of a car at a stoplight on Coleman Boulevard about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the report. He tried to give the officer a Town Council card instead of a driver’s license for identification and kept asking if he could talk to somebody to speed up the process, according to the officer.
The driver of the other car told officers she had neck and chest pain.
Burn was booked into the Charleston County jail on a DUI charge and released on his own recognizance Sunday morning.
Burn, a lifelong Mount Pleasant resident, was elected to council in 2009 and owns Hughes Equipment Rental, according to the town’s website.
