Rural McClellanville community meets tonight to discuss proposed school changes
Residents of rural McClellanville will meet tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Lincoln High to discuss proposed changes to its middle and high school grades.
The middle school portion of Linoln High has a small enrollment and low student achievement.
To address those problems, Charleston School Superintendent Nancy McGinley wants to move seventh and eighth grades from the Lincoln High campus to St. James-Santee Elementary. And she eventually wants Lincoln High to offer only core academic classes such as math and English, and students would take a bus to Wando High for their electives.
The school board has agreed to move the middle grades, but it since has said it wants more community input on the plan. The board plans to re-vote on the issue.
A similar meeting is supposed to happen in the rural Hollywood community, but that has not yet been scheduled. The superintendent has proposed and the board approved moving sixth grades from elementary schools to the Baptist Hill High campus. Opponents to that proposal are supporters of Jane Edwards Elementary, a small rural school near Edisto Island.
