Berkeley School District under investigation for ethics violations
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating several Berkeley County School District employees and board members for possible ethics violations during the district’s school improvement bond referendum campaign, sources say.
Chief Deputy Attorney General John W. McIntosh requested an investigation from SLED chief Mark Keel and state Ethics Commission Executive Director Herbert R. Hayden Jr. on Jan. 17.
“We have received information that indicates potential numerous violations of the South Carolina Ethics Act, and other misconduct in office,” McIntosh wrote in a letter.
SLED spokesman Thom Berry said he was unable to confirm if there was an investigation under way, but Berkeley County School District officials and Daniel Island lawyer Josh Whitley, who first raised the ethics questions, both confirmed it.
