AARP offers free tax-prep help in Charleston region

The AARP Foundation maintains 10 free tax preparation sites throughout the Charleston area, serving mainly low- to medium-income taxpayers with special emphasis on the elderly.

Residents of all ages are welcome, and AARP membership is not required.

The sites operate until April 15 and are staffed by volunteers who are certified by the IRS.

The following are sites in the Charleston area, including phone numbers for appointments:

Charleston County Main Library, 68 Calhoun St., downtown Charleston. 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Mondays.

Lowcountry Senior Center, 865 Riverland Drive, James Island. 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesdays. By appointment only: 762-9555.

Ashley River Baptist Church, 1101 Savannah Highway, Charleston. 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesdays.

St. Andrews Library, 1735 N. Woodmere Drive, West Ashley. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Fridays.

Johns Island Library, 3531 Maybank Highway. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays.

Mount Pleasant Library, 1135 Mathis Ferry Road. 1-5 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays.

Dorchester Road Library, 63325 Dorchester Road, North Charleston. 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays.

Faith Sellers Senior Center, 312 N. Laurel St., Summerville. 1-5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Appointment: 871-5053.

Berkeley County Library, 325 Old Moncks Corner Road, Goose Creek. 9:15 a.m.-1 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays. Appointment: 270-7881.

Farmer & Merchant Bank, 221 E. Main St., Moncks Corner. 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesdays. By appointment only: 761-0390.
