The Citadel’s baseball team has gotten sturdy pitching from its weekend rotation so far this young season, and the Bulldogs will need more of the same this weekend in the Charleston Crab House Shootout at Riley Park.
The Citadel (4-4) hosts an impressive field, including a game against 5-1 Pitt at 4 p.m. today; 5-0 Virginia Commonwealth at 4 p.m. Saturday; and a doubleheader with 3-4 UNC Asheville at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
Pitt already has a sweep of national power Wichita State, and VCU defeated Southern Conference preseason favorite Elon.
Citadel weekend starters Austin Pritcher, James Reeves and Austin Mason have combined to allow nine earned runs in 35 1/3 innings this year, good from an earned-run average of just 2.29.
Pritcher (1-0) has not allowed a run in 13 innings this year, and has not allowed an earned run at Riley Park in his last 32 1/3 innings. Mason, a freshman right-hander, has allowed seven hits and three runs in 12 1/3 innings in his first two college starts.
Tyler Griffin is batting .429 with four home runs and 12 runs batted-in for The Citadel, and catcher Joe Jackson is at .378 with one homer and 12 RBI.
