An ailing Korean War veteran visits his old ship, the Laffey, at Patriots Point

MOUNT PLEASANT — Gerald Bowman never thought he’d see the U.S.S. Laffey again, much less set foot on it.

But 60 years after the Korean War veteran served as a machinist mate on the Navy destroyer, the 82-year-old Arkansas man was able to get one last tour aboard the ship at Patriots Point, courtesy of the Dream Foundation, a wish-fulfilling non-profit that works with adults with life-threatening illnesses.

The visit was emotional and awe-inspiring.
