State report: Veteran defender Wilson returns to Battery
Veteran defender John Wilson signed to play another season for the Charleston Battery.
Wilson, 35, has played in 228 games (second all-time) for the Battery, seeing 19,973 minutes of action, recording one goal and 10 assists. Wilson has been on three of the Battery’s four championship teams (2003, 2010 and 2012).
“Being able to sign John Wilson to another season is a tremendous plus to the club as John brings a wealth of experience to the community and the team on the field which cannot easily be replaced,” said Charleston head coach Mike Anhaeuser.
Wilson began his pro career with the Battery in 1999. He signed with Major League Soccer’s Kansas City Wizards in 2000 and returned to the Battery to play three seasons from 2001-03. In 2004, Wilson signed with the Rochester Rhinos. A year later, he signed with MLS’ D.C. United. After three years with D.C. United, Wilson rejoined the Battery before the start of the 2008 and has been with the club ever since.
Softball
College of Charleston hosts No. 7 Tennessee (14-2) in a single game at 3 p.m. today at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant. The Cougars (6-3) have won six straight games.
Baseball
Fridays will be all red at Riley Park during the upcoming Charleston RiverDogs season as Red Shirt Friday returns. All fans who wear red shirts to the game on Friday will save $1 off the purchase of their ticket at the box office. That dollar can then be donated to benefit the charity Canines for Veterans.
And to top things off, the RiverDogs players, manager and coaches will again wear specially made red jerseys for every Friday night home game.
