Hanahan infant remains in critical condition following alleged abuse
A 5-month-old boy remained hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday and was still suffering from seizures following alleged abuse by his father, police said.
Hanahan police on Friday arrested Derek Allan Stilson, 23, of Murray Drive. He is charged with infliction of great bodily injury upon a child.
Investigators said Stilson slammed his son onto the floor out of anger when the infant wouldn’t stop crying.
Police officers in an affidavit described Stilson angrily throwing the child onto the floor on Feb. 19. Stilson called 911 two days later because the child wasn’t acting normally, the affidavit states.
Investigators looked to Stilson when doctors learned that the boy had a fractured skull, blood behind his retinas and swelling on his brain, police said.
The child, who has been placed in protective custody, continues to receive treatment at Medical University Hospital.
Stilson is being held at the Berkeley County jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.
