Governor to present Order of the Palmetto to former Charleston airport board member today
Gov. Nikki Haley will present the state’s highest award to a former Charleston County Aviation Authority member today.
The governor will present Bill Craver Jr. with the Order of the Palmetto at 2:30 p.m. at the airport.
Craver was one of the original members of the Aviation Authority when it was founded in 1970 and served as chairman for 18 years.
He insisted that the airport be self-sustaining without taxpayers’ support, and he was instrumental in creating the terminal that was built in 1985.
The terminal building will soon undergo a $200 million expansion and redevelopment to meet the growing number of passengers and new airline security measures.
He also worked with the Air Force to welcome the Military Airlift Command as the first customer in the new international facility inside the terminal.
Craver also helped develop a general aviation airport in Mount Pleasant.
