No. 7 South Carolina tops Furman, 5-2, in baseball
COLUMBIA — Freshman left-hander Jack Wynkoop hurled 51/3 scoreless innings in his first career start and No. 7 South Carolina scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie in a 5-2 win over Furman on Tuesday afternoon at Carolina Stadium.
Wynkoop (1-0) scattered five hits with no walks while striking out two for the Gamecocks (6-1). Evan Beal was also effective in relief with 22/3 perfect innings with three strikeouts. Tyler Webb pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts to pick up his third save of the season.
In the fifth, USC scored two runs on a bases-loaded throwing error, then made it 3-0 on an RBI single by Grayson Greiner.
The Gamecocks added another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Graham Saiko, and another in the seventh on an RBI triple by T.J. Costen.
Furman (5-2) scored twice in the ninth before Webb was able to nail down the save.
Max Shrock and Chase Vergason had two hits apiece to lead the Gamecocks, who are at Clemson on Friday.
Reliever Elliott Warford (0-1) suffered the loss for the Paladins.
