Summerville sewage spill might have reached Sawmill Branch Canal
SUMMERVILLE — Some of 6,000 gallons of spilled wastewater is thought to have reached Sawmill Branch Canal from a backed-up sewer main on Orangeburg Road.
Dorchester County crews have drawn samples from the canal for testing; warning signs will remain posted until samples come back under acceptable pollution limits, said Jim Beasley, of S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.
The canal drains to the Ashley River.
Flow has been diverted from the main that spewed water and waste during the heavy rain Monday. A crew will make repairs to the older pipe involved, a county official said.
“It’s all contained. Everything is running now and (drainage) is going well,” said Kristen Champagne, Dorchester County water and sewer department director.
A department crew noticed the cave-in during the rain, she said, preventing more sewage from spilling.
