Jim Cantore of The Weather Channel is coming to Charleston on a pleasure trip this week to the 2013 BB&T Charleston Wine + Food Festival. Organizers hope his visit bodes well for the festival’s four day-run that begins Thursday night.

“We think he’s our lucky charm,” says festival Communications Director Ashley Zink.

The last thing the festival wants is an encore of the weather last year, a deluge of rain that put a big damper on weekend events.

Heavy downpours this past Saturday were a troublemaker but not a major setback, Zink says. Walls to the tents being erected at Marion Square, the site of the festival’s Culinary Village, couldn’t go up until the ground started drying out a bit Sunday. It put the festival slightly behind schedule but Zink is confident the time can be made up before the village opens Friday.

“Everything is going as fast as it can. We should be good by then.”

Zink says the festival staff is feeling “really good” about the forecast, mostly sunny skies with highs in the 50s through Sunday. “We’ll pick chillier temperatures over rain any day. We think cooler weather is better than hotter weather because you just bundle up and you’ll be fine.”

Tickets sales are going well, Zink reports. As usual, a number of events are sold out. But among tickets remaining are those for the Culinary Village on all three days and the Festival After Hours party Saturday night. This year’s party, which will be 8:30-11:30 p.m. at the Visitor Center Bus Shed, has a “Party Around the World” theme.

People can purchase tickets through the website, charlestonwineandfood.com, until the day of an event, Zink says. A ticketing tent also will be open at Marion Square from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Cantore, by the way, has been to the festival before, Zink says. “He loves the festival and loves Charleston and tries to make it back as much as he can.”
