A 5-month-old child remained hospitalized in critical condition Monday after his father slammed him onto the floor out of anger when he wouldn’t stop crying, Hanahan police said.

Hanahan police on Friday arrested Derek Allan Stilson, 23, of Murray Drive, Lt. Michael Fowler said. He was charged with infliction of great bodily injury upon a child, he said.

Police officers in an affidavit described Stilson angrily throwing the child onto the floor on Feb. 19. Stilson called 911 two days later because the child wasn’t acting normally, the affidavit states.

In a call placed to 911 on Thursday, Stilson sought help for his son, who was struggling to breathe.

“I’ve never seen this before. ... Are they going to take him to a hospital or something?” Stilson asked dispatchers in a calm voice.

Paramedics transported the child to Medical University Hospital for treatment. Investigators looked to Stilson when doctors learned that the boy had a fractured skull, blood behind his retinas and swelling on his brain, Fowler said.

The child has been placed in protective custody, Fowler said.

A judge on Saturday set Stilson’s bail at $250,000, Fowler said. He is being held at the Berkeley County jail, he said.

Stilson’s Facebook page states that he is a sales agent at a telemarketing firm and works at a pizza business.
