Walterboro police are looking for a 19-year-old man accused of beating another man during a confrontation at a local motel on Sunday.

Police have obtained warrants to charge Quenton HaKeith Sanders of Walterboro with attempted murder, Police Chief Otis Rhodes said.

Police said the incident played out this way:

About 4:49 p.m., police responded to Sunset Inn, 1577 Bells Highway, in reference to a fight that had just occurred.

Witnesses told officers an unknown man, later identified as Sanders, had been arguing throughout the day with Shawn Werts, 31, of Walterboro.

At some point, Sanders left the motel and returned with two other men. One of the men put his hand on his waistband as if he had a gun. Werts then pulled a hammer from his pocket and threw it at Sanders when Sanders struck him with an unknown blunt object.

The men assaulted Werts and took the hammer with them. Werts blacked out and did not wake up until police arrived.

Colleton County Fire and Rescue transported Werts to Colleton County Medical Center.

On Monday, police identified Sanders as a suspect in the attack. Sanders is still at large.

Anyone having information about the crime can contact Walterboro Public Safety at 843-782-1030 or 843-549-1811.
