— The College of Charleston softball team came from behind to beat Wagner, 3-2, in what turned out to be its final game of the Cougar Classic.

Charleston’s night game versus Charleston Southern was canceled in the bottom of the first inning because of a light outage at Patriots Point.

In addition, Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Buccaneers has also been postponed due to likely poor weather conditions.

Against Wagner, Charleston (6-3) fell into a hole after a first-inning, two-run homer for the Seahawks. Cougars pitcher Stephanie Saylors (3-0) bore down to keep the deficit manageable and received late run support from her offense. Saylors went the distance.

The Cougars’ bats were paced by Kelsey Hodgson and Chandler Frisbie, who each went 2 for 3 with an RBI apiece.

Track and field

Geno Porter and Micah Wessinger earned spots on the winner’s pedestal in the weight throw and 800, respectively, as The Citadel wrapped up action at the SoCon Indoor Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Porter, who dominated the Bulldogs’ throwing team throughout the season, heaved the 35-pound weight 56-6 to take third place in the event and earn a spot on the all-conference team. Porter, in his first collegiate season, recorded a mark of 50-feet or more in five of the six indoor meets.

The throw moves the Fort Dorchester graduate into second place in Citadel history.

Micah Wessinger ran her way to the pedestal for the third time and scored for her team for the fourth time of her career at the indoor conference championship meet as the senior captain topped her own school record in the 800 with a time of 2:12.70 to earn third place in the event.

Tennis

In perhaps one of the longest matches in program history, the College of Charleston men’s tennis team fell short of the upset bid of Georgia State, 4-3, on Saturday night in Atlanta.

In an epic eight-hour dual match which began with singles play and the first team to reach four points, the Cougars (2-3) took four of the six singles matches into three sets against the Panthers (7-3).
