Charleston Southern splits doubleheader with Marist in baseball
Chas. Southern 9-1, Marist 0-2
After waiting out two days of rain, Charleston Southern and Marist split a doubleheader Sunday, with the Buccaneers winning the opener, 9-0, and Marist taking the nightcap, 2-1.
Charleston Southern (4-3), which has already had three rainouts, next hosts The Citadel at 2 p.m. Wednesday at CSU Ballpark.
“Our first week of the season, we’ve been dealing with weather and whether or not we would get to play,” CSU coach Stuart Lake said. “The first game, we came out and responded well. The second game, their starter really pitched well. It was tough for both of us to wait this long to play this weekend.”
In the first game, Ryan Gunther struck out eight in 61/3 shutout innings, while Chase Shelton went 3 for 3 with four RBIs in the win over Marist (2-2). Alex Tomasovich added three hits and an RBI, while John Faircloth and Bobby Ison both went 2 for 3. Ison scored three runs.
In the second game, Marist starter Kevin McCarthy held the Bucs to four hits, all singles, and struck out four.
The Bucs took a 1-0 lead as Harrison Wilkins singled and scored on an Ison single in the third.
Marist answered back on an RBI single from Mark Brennan in the top of the fourth. The Red Foxes took the lead in the sixth as Matt Pagano singled and scored on a squeeze play by Nick McQuail.
