Former Clemson stars DeAndre Hopkins and Andre Ellington post poor 40-yard dash times at NFL Combine

CLEMSON - Former Clemson stars, receiver DeAndre Hopkins and running back Andre Ellington, posted less-than-stellar 40-yard dash times at the NFL Combine today.

Hopkins ran a rather pedestrian 40-yard dash time of 4.57 seconds and Ellington ran a 4.59 second 40, though the former Berkeley High star appeared to injure his hamstring during his sprint.

Both the times are below average for receiver and running back prospects.

Perhaps the biggest negative regarding Ellington’s prospect profile is his inability to stay healthy. He was often less than 100 percent at Clemson and he injured a hamstring and missed time at the Senior Bowl earlier this year.

Ellington projects to be a mid-round pick in April’s draft. compares him to Detroit Lions running back Jahvid Best.

Hopkins’ game-tape always figured to be more impressive than his NFL Combine showing.

Hopkins has received rave review for his hands and body control, traits that helped him catch 82 passes for 1,405 yards and 18 touchdowns last fall, all program records.

Hopkins did post a 36-inch vertical jump and measured in at 6-1, 214 pounds.

Hopkins is expected to be a second-round pick in the draft, a projection likely not influenced much by Sunday’s workout.
