Bernard Harmon makes Timberland High wrestling history
Bernard Harmon became the first wrestler in Timberland High School history to win an individual state championship when he defeated B.J. Yeargin, 5-3, in the Class AA-A tournament on Saturday at the Anderson Civic Center.
Harmon finished the season with a 34-3 record. The championship in the 170-pound division gave him 97 career victories, which is also a school record.
Harmon is a junior and a two-year starter at linebacker on the football team. He also has a 4.0 grade-point average and is ranked ninth in his class.
Other area state champions from Saturday include Summerville’s Gavin Perkins (Class AAAA, 126 pounds), Academic Magnet’s Josh McDermett (Class AA-A, 126 pounds), Hanahan’s Dennis Flores (Class AAA, 170 pounds) and Stratford’s Nicholas Young (Class AAAA, 132 pounds).
