Comedy Central star ‘couldn’t be happier’ to campaign for sister
Comedian Stephen Colbert briefly dropped his conservative persona Saturday to campaign for his big sister in Charleston.
Elizabeth Colbert Busch, a Democratic candidate running for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, arrived with her brother for a reception Saturday afternoon at The Alley on Columbus Street.
The Comedy Central star, who grew up in Charleston, said he “couldn’t be happier” to stump for his sister.
Colbert Busch previously said she has no plans to appear on his show, “The Colbert Report.”
Additional events were planned later Saturday, including a dinner at Mark Tanenbaum’s home on Sullivan’s Island. Entrance into the fund- raisers ranged from $250 to $5,200. Media representatives were not allowed into the events.
Colbert Busch is one of 18 candidates running for the congressional seat, which was left empty after Gov. Nikki Haley appointed Sen. Tim Scott to the Senate following former Sen. Jim DeMint’s resignation in December.
Colbert Busch will face off against Ben Frasier in the Democratic primary on March 19. A special election for the seat is scheduled for May 7.
