There’s a Celtic theme in the air this week as two different performances borrow from the Scottish Highlands.
First is the 11th annual Pipe-Major Sandy Jones Invitational, held in conjunction with the Charleston Indoor Games starting at 7 p.m. Saturday.
The evening invitational event will consist of a concert program split into two halves. The first half will feature a pipe band concert presented by the Charleston Police Pipes and Drums. It will feature classic sets of pipe band tunes and competition medleys that the band performs, including drum salutes and the Scottish fiddle.
The second half of the concert will be a People’s Choice Competition. Solo pipers and drummers will be invited to present a medley of tunes, and the audience will vote on the winners. Proceeds from the concert and People’s Choice Competition will go toward scholarships for pipers to attend summer programs. In addition, a donation will be made to The Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes toward its upcoming participation in the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo.
The concert is in Buyer Auditorium in Mark Clark Hall at The Citadel. Advance tickets are $18 or $20 at the door.

The second Celtic event is an evening of music and storytelling at 7 p.m. Friday at Circular Congregational Church, 150 Meeting St.
The duo performing is Castlebay, a husband-wife team from Maine who study Celtic and fisherman music and stories. Julia Lane plays Celtic harp and sings while Fred Gosbee plays whistles, pipes and fiddle-type instruments. Fred also sings and tells stories. They play extensively throughout the East Coast and Great Britain. The cost is $20 at the door. The couple are performing to help support the restoration of the historic stained-glass windows at Circular Congregational Church.
3 days of Bach
If Bach is more your style, then there’s a great free three-day festival Friday-next Sunday in the sanctuary of First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, 53 Meeting St.
Dr. JeeYoon Choi, music director and organist at First (Scots), is the Bach Festival’s artistic director.
Some of the highlights include:
At 7:30 p.m. Friday, the festival opens with Dieterich Buxtehude’s “Membra Jesu Nostri” (“The Limbs of Our Jesus”) composed in 1680. This work contains seven parts, each focusing upon a different part of Christ’s crucified body. The performance will feature a vocal quintet with Margaret Cook and Susan Atwood, sopranos; Ricard Bordas, countertenor and conductor; Oliver Mercer, tenor, and David Young, bass. The vocalists will be accompanied by a chamber ensemble using period instruments.
At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, audiences will have the opportunity to reflect upon different musical styles in a selection of organ concertos brought together in an intimate chamber setting with candlelight.
The festival concludes at 4 p.m. next Sunday with a large-scale choral event recalling the story of three renowned baroque composers: Georg Philipp Telemann, Christoph Graupner, and J.S. Bach.
The concert will open with two orchestral works, Graupner’s “Overture” and Telemann’s “Water Music” and close with Bach’s “Magnificat” as performed by the combined voices of the Festival Kirk Choir and the Charleston Southern University Concert Singers.
Donations will be accepted and checks may be made to the Bach Festival of Charleston.

The Women’s Council of the Gibbes Museum of Art presents Art of Design, a benefit for the museum March 15.
New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn will be the featured presenter at the auxiliary group’s annual spring luncheon. Guests will dine in the courtyard while Horyn shares stories of life in the fashion fast lane.
Throughout her career, Horyn’s unflinching reviews of fashion’s top designers have generated both journalistic praise and criticism.
Tickets for the luncheon are $125 and must be purchased in advance at gibbesmuseum.org/events or by calling 722-2706, ext. 22.
The gathering will begin at 11 a.m., bidding for the auction items will be open from 11-noon, and the luncheon and lecture will begin at 12:30 p.m.
Art educator award
Also, the Gibbes Museum of Art will award the Mary Whyte Art Educator Award for the sixth year to a high school visual arts teacher in a South Carolina school district who has demonstrated superior commitment to students and art craft.
The award is administered and presented annually by the Gibbes Museum of Art. Entries for the annual award and $2,500 cash prize can be made exclusively online at www.marywhyteaward.org through March 1.
Artists who have applied previously must update their online entry form in order to remain eligible for the 2013 award.
Watercolor artist Whyte is a teacher and author whose paintings have earned national recognition. A resident of Johns Island, she garners much of her inspiration from the Gullah descendants of Coastal Carolina slaves.
Last year, audiences chose Tyler Stuart’s absurdist comedy “The Practice Child” as the winner of the inaugural Playwrights Competition. If you have a special script or idea, it could become this year’s world premiere production.
What If? Productions is now accepting submissions for unpublished and professionally unproduced full-length plays and musicals from playwrights who are current residents of South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. Submissions will be accepted through April 19.
The three finalists will be presented in partial staged readings at the Playwrights Festival in July, where audiences will select the winner to be produced in 2014.

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens and the Charleston Artist Guild will award $3,000 to the best painting that embodies the impressionistic style of painters during the Charleston Renaissance.
This nationwide contest, “Gardens of Dreams,” is open to original artwork created and conceived by the entrants that depicts a scene at Magnolia Gardens.
Other cash prizes are: $1,000 second place; $500 third place; and five honorable mentions, $100 each.
The entry fee is $25 for the first entry and $15 for each additional painting. There is no limit to the number of entries.
Sept. 10 is the deadline to enter. Show dates are Nov. 10-24. Art selected for the judging will be displayed at the Charleston Visitor Center and The Carriage House at Magnolia.
