Lowcountry law firm to award scholarships to high school seniors

A Lowcountry law firm is awarding scholarships to high school seniors who excel in academics and can write the best essays about the dangers of drunken driving.

Joye Law Firm will hand out six $2,000 scholarships. To apply, students must write short essays about the dangers of drinking and driving as well as ways they, their families, and their communities can spread awareness and educate others about this issue.

“Every year, our law firm sees at least one case where a teenager’s life is ruined due to drunk driving, either because they were killed or seriously injured by a drunk driver, or because they got behind the wheel after drinking and then caused an accident,” partner Ken Harrell said. “I don’t know if these essays will have any impact but even if it just makes the kids who write them think twice about drinking and driving, or getting into a car with someone who’s done the same, some good will come out of them.”

The firm has a selection committee that will review the applicants essays, school activities, positions of leadership, special honors, community involvement and academic achievement.

The deadline to submit applications is April 1. The winning students will be announced in May. The application can be downloaded at www.Joye InTheCommunity.com.
