Chase Lounge murder suspect surrenders to Colleton County deputies
Authorities on Friday arrested a 49-year-old man accused of mortally wounding another man Thursday during a shooting inside a Colleton County nightclub.
Larry Henderson. of Hill Street in Walterboro, was charged with murder and using a gun in the commission of a violent crime after he surrendered to deputies nearly 24 hours after they said he shot and killed Leon Cockrum Jr. inside the Chase Lounge.
Deputies responded to the Proctor Street nightclub just outside Walterboro city limits at 8:38 p.m. Thursday. It was the second shooting at the club this year and the third since September.
Inside they found Cockrum, 52, bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds, Chief Deputy Ted Stanfield said.
Cockrum was airlifted to the Medical University Hospital, where he died about 3 a.m. Friday, Coroner Richard Harvey said.
Within hours deputies had arrest warrants for Henderson, although Stanfield declined to release an incident report.
Authorities searched for him until they received a call from him Friday evening. Deputies found him waiting behind his house, and he was arrested without incident, Stanfield said.
Henderson’s arrest record dates to 1981. He was most recently arrested and charged with assault and second-degree battery in November by Walterboro Public Safety officers.
He also was convicted of DUI in January 2011.
Stanfield said there have been no discussions with the county about revoking the club’s business license. Thursday’s shooting was the first one recently that happened inside the club, and Stanfield said club officials were cooperative with deputies.
Colleton County Administrator Kevin Griffin said the county has discussed beefing up its nuisance ordinance to allow officials to shut down derelict properties with repeated issues, similar to what Walterboro has done.
On the heels of the shooting, 14th Circuit Solicitor Duffie Stone said he will announce a new strategy to prosecute gun violence throughout his five-county district on Monday in front of the Colleton County Courthouse in Walterboro.
