SUMTER — Standout guard Austin Ajukwa scored 27 of his game-high 34 points in the second half tonight to lead Cardinal Newman to a 63-49 victory over Porter-Gaud in a SCISA boys’ Class AAA state semifinal at the Sumter Civic Center. The future Tiger had a stretch where he scored 11 consecutive Cardinal Newman points, including the first seven of the fourth quarter to push a 31-30 lead to eight points. The 6-6 senior’s slam dunk off a fastbreak with 2:41 left in the game was the exclamation point and gave the Cardinals a 10-point lead.
Cardinal Newman upped its record to 18-10 and will play the winner of the Hammond School-Augusta Christian winner in Saturday’s championship game. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m.
Porter-Gaud, seeking its first state title since 2005, finished with a 22-4 record.
