Charleston Southern continued to add to its football staff under new coach Jamey Chadwell, naming Chad Staggs as defensive coordinator Wednesday.
Staggs, who will also be linebackers coach, comes to CSU after spending last season on Chadwell’s staff as the defensive coordinator at Delta State in Cleveland, Miss. This will be his fifth season on staff with Chadwell.
“Chad brings four years of experience of coordinating a defense and has had our defenses consistently ranked at the top of the standings,” Chadwell said. “His aggressive style of defense will fit perfectly with our desire to have a defensive team that plays with purpose and passion.”
Staggs also spent three seasons at North Greenville with Chadwell, building a winning defense that helped the Crusaders advance to the NCAA Division II quarterfinal in 2011. In his third year as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at NGU, Staggs added the title of assistant head coach for 2011.
In 12 years of coaching, Staggs has learned under some of the game’s best, including Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier at South Carolina and Jim Satterfield at Lexington High School. All three have won NCAA national championships.
Staggs spent five seasons as a graduate assistant at USC working with both the secondary and linebackers. He coached in two bowl games in his tenure with the Gamecocks.
Staggs was secondary coach at Charleston Southern in 2009.
