Military planning local town halls if cuts go through
Charleston’s military base leadership said this morning they will hold a series of “town hall meetings” to answer civilian employee questions if furloughs are ordered by the Pentagon.
In a statement from Joint Base Charleston, officials said that if Congress’ mandated budget cuts go through, they have preparations scheduled.
“When action does take place our local leadership will hold town hall meetings to interact directly with our civilian employees,” the statement said. It continued “the command here at Joint Base Charleston is working diligently to share information since we understand how troubling this is for our civilian teammates.”
The mandated cuts are scheduled to take effect March 1 if Congress fails to act. There are more than 5,000 civilians in the Charleston area who work for the military. Furloughs are expected as a first step in the cuts.
