Police investigate suspected accidental shooting of 12-year-old

Police in Walterboro are investigating the shooting of a 12-year-old, which is believed to be accidental. The shooting occurred on Wednesday at about 7:15 p.m. on Center Street, according to an incident report.

Initial reports to police indicated that the 12-year-old was playing with a 16-year-old when the 12-year-old was shot with a shotgun in the upper thigh with bird shot, the report stated.

The child was taken to Medical University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery, according to officials with Walterboro Public Safety.

The child and teenager told police it was an accident, according to the report. It remains unclear from the report who shot the gun.
