Man arrested, second sought in foiled robbery attempt

Charleston police arrested one man and are searching for another in a foiled robbery attempt that was witnessed by police.

Police arrested Terry Jamar Simmons Jr., 21, of East Surrey Drive in connection with the incident, police spokesman Charles Francis said. He was charged with attempted armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, he said.

While patrolling the Ardmore neighborhood on Monday, police saw two men run toward a third man in the middle of Sequoia Street shortly after 10 p.m., Francis said

The third man raised his hands in the air and backed away from the other men, who were armed with a pistol, Francis said.

The two men with the gun fled the scene when officers activated their unit’s blue light, Francis said.

Officers found Simmons crouched next to a house on Balsam Street. He was held at the Charleston County jail, Francis said. A judge on Tuesday set Simmons’ bail at $200,000.

Police identified the second suspect as Bobby Eugene Warthaw, 25, of Dowling Road in North Charleston, Francis said.

Warthaw is wanted on charges of attempted armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, Francis said.

Anyone with information can call Charleston Police at 577-7434 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
