Suspect arrested in hit-and-run death of Kingstree basketball coach

A suspect has been arrested in connection with Monday’s hit-and-run wreck that killed Kingstree High School girls basketball coach Sonya Burgess, authorities said.

S.C. Highway Patrol Senior Trooper Bridget Wyant confirmed this afternoon that Daveline Leshon Holmes has been charged with reckless homicide and hit-and-run involving death.

Bail for the 37-year-old Georgetown County woman was set at $115,000, according to Williamsburg County records.

Wyant had no immediate information on how investigators tied Holmes to the crime.

Burgess, 39, was traveling south on U.S. 52 about 6:30 p.m. when she swerved to avoid a head-on collision with another vehicle, Wyant said. Burgess then over-corrected, which caused the 1999 Ford Expedition she was driving to flip, she said.

Burgess stepped out of the vehicle and into the road, where she was struck by a second unidentified vehicle, Wyant said. That vehicle left the scene, she said.

Three minors were traveling with Burgess when the wreck occurred. Wyant said paramedics transported them to Williamsburg Regional Hospital for treatment.

Burgess was pronounced dead at the scene, Williamsburg County Coroner Harrison McKnight said. The three minors who were with her were treated and released, he said.
