Skyline over Gaillard to change
The Charleston skyline over the Gaillard Auditorium will change in the coming weeks with two construction cranes going into place.
One of the massive structures - the shorter of the two - is already up, with the other scheduled to go up the week of Feb. 25.
The bigger tower will be 175 feet tall, with a 295-foot outward reach.
The shorter one is 140 feet tall with a 200-foot horizontal boom.
Both cranes will be able to swing free when not in use in what officials say is an intended “weather vane” style. Both are also strong enough to withstand hurricane storm winds.
The downtown performance site is undergoing a $142 million makeover.
