Charleston County School Board could reconsider grade shifts for McClellanville, Hollywood
Some Charleston County School Board members didn't realize what they approved during a recent board meeting and want to vote again on the issue.
The board agreed at its Jan. 28 meeting to begin moving seventh and eighth-graders at Lincoln High in McClellanville to St. James-Santee Elementary this fall. The board also gave the go-ahead for sixth graders in District 23 (Hollywood/Ravenel) to be moved from their elementary schools to the Baptist Hill High campus.
The board decided to move forward with those changes without ever discussing them during the meeting. Some board members admitted at the next meeting they didn't realize what they approved, and they want more community engagement before the district goes ahead with those changes.
“I don't think it was clear,” said board member Elizabeth Moffly. “At least it wasn't clear for me.”
School board Chairwoman Cindy Bohn Coats said the issue could be put back on an agenda if members follow board policy for doing so.
