Jazz pianist Freddy Cole to visit Charleston for first time
An elder jazz statesman, Freddy Cole, will play two sets with his band Tuesday at The Mezz, a jazz club above Sermet’s Downtown, 276 King St
Cole is the youngest brother of the legendary Nat “King” Cole and a respected pianist and singer in his own right. Now 81, Freddy Cole still plays regularly in the U.S. and abroad. He grew up in a musical Chicago home visited by the likes of Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Lionel Hampton. Billy Eckstine was an early influence, Cole has said.
Today, he plays with guitarist Randy Napoleon, drummer Curtis Boyd and bassist Elias Bailey (who also works with singer Rene Marie). The gig at The Mezz marks the first time Cole has performed in Charleston.
The band will perform two sets, at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Reservations are required for table seating. Admission, payable at the door, is $20 per person. For more information, visit www.mezzdowntown.com or call 853-4515.
