A man told police somebody shot him while he was driving on Interstate 26 this afternoon.

The man showed up at Trident Hospital with a gunshot wound to his thigh, North Charleston police spokesman Spencer Pryor said. He told police he was driving west toward Summerville near the U.S. 78 exit when a beige-colored sedan sped up to the right side of his vehicle and that somebody started firing at him.

Officers found damage to the car consistent with gunfire but no evidence in the roadway, Pryor said. The incident remains under investigation.
