Davidson won its 10th straight game and clinched a share of the Southern Conference South Division title with a 72-57 victory over The Citadel tonight at McAlister Field House.
The Wildcats (18-7, 14-1), led by 18 points from Nik Cochran, also earned a first-round bye for next month’s SoCon basketball tournament in Asheville with the top seed out of the South Division.
Davidson, which has not lost since Jan. 14 at Georgia Southern, has won nine division titles in the last 12 years, and 12 overall under coach Bob McKillop. The Wildcats’ 10-game win streak is their 10th of at least 10 games in 24 seasons under McKillop.
The Citadel, a 70-38 loser at Davidson on Jan. 17, fell to 6-19 overall and 3-12 in the SoCon. Mike Groselle scored 21 points to lead the Bulldogs, who have lost four in a row.
Davidson put five players in double figures, with Chris Czerapowicz adding 14 and Jake Cohen 13. JP Kuhlman and Tyler Kalinoski scored 10 each.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, making five of their first six shots. But Davidson took control with a 21-5 run, outscored The Citadel by 37-12 the rest of the half and led by 37-20 at the break.
The Citadel could get no closer than 11 in the second half.
