Area swimmers set state record

GREENVILLE — Mount Pleasant-based LTP Swimming’s men’s 18-and-under 800-yard free relay team set a state record in the first day of the South Carolina Short Course State Championships on Friday.

The team of Dirk Bell, Cason Brown, Ben Hillebrand and Matt Adams swam a time of 6:47.74, breaking the previous record of 6:59.24 set by Team Greenville in 2010.

Mount Pleasant Swim Club (Matthew Stapleton, Zach Lierley, Travis Morrin, Brennan Gedney) came in second with a time of 6:56.11.

Other local event winners on Friday were both in the women’s 1000 freestyle. Emma Gourdie (SMRT) won the 11-12 age group with a time of 10:22.72, and Megan Kingsley (MPSC) won the 15-18 age group with a time of 10:18.73.

Competition continues through Monday.
