Charleston police identify second suspect in Sumter Street home invasion

Charleston police are hunting for a 20-year-old man in connection with a home invasion that occurred Monday on Sumter Street.

Brandon Green of Knotty Pine Road in Summerville is wanted on charges of first-degree burglary, nine counts of armed robbery and nine counts of kidnapping, police said.

The incident began about 12:35 a.m. at 313 Sumter St. Three masked men — two armed with handguns and one holding a baseball bat — entered the home and robbed the victims of their money, cellular phones and electronic equipment, police said.

A man saw the holdup from his computer and called police. He was chatting with his girlfriend on Skype, a service that allows people to talk via webcam, when he saw a masked man walk into her bedroom with a pistol shortly after midnight, police said.

Three of the victims were assaulted by the suspects. They were treated at the scene by paramedics, police said.

Police arrested one of the alleged robbers at Line Street and Rutledge Avenue shortly after the holdup.

DeShawn Heyward, 20, of Chatman Avenue in Hanahan was charged with three counts of first-degree assault and battery, first-degree burglary, four counts of kidnapping, simple possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, police said.
