Cooper River Bridge Run within 10,000 of another sellout; price goes up to $45 after Friday

Officials with the 36th Cooper River Bridge Run and Walk expect a small rush on registrations on Friday, as people try to beat a $5 price hike to register.

The cost to register goes from $40 per person to $45 after 11:59 p.m. Friday.

As of 3 p.m. today, 28,728 people have signed up for the April 6 event, according to Assistant Race Director Tami Varn.

Varn and other race officials are wondering when the race will reach its new, lower cap for regularly-priced registrations of 38,500. (That doesn’t include 1,500 charity registrations that cost $150 each.)

Last year, the Bridge Run set a record for selling out faster than ever before – three weeks before the race. It reached the regularly-priced registration cap of 43,000 on March 8 for the March 31, 2012 event.

But this year, that cap is 38,500. The drop in the cap was due to the logistical nightmares of last year’s race when the start was delayed for nearly an hour because of transportation delays.

Because of the fewer number of registrations, Varn and fellow Assistant Race Director Joanna Jackson think the cap will be reached within the first two weeks of March.

“For some reason, I think March 11 is going to be the day,” says Varn.
