Goose Creek police on Wednesday charged a daycare provider accused of beating a child with a belt.
Elona Colette Crawford, 38, of Ceaton Court in Goose Creek, was charged with third-degree assault and battery in connection with the incident, police said.
A woman went to police after her 6-year-old son told her that Crawford, who often goes by “Ms. Colette,” beat him while he was staying at Just For Kids Daycare Facility, 107 St. James Avenue, an incident report states.
While giving her son a bath on Oct. 1, the woman asked the boy to put his arms up and turn around. According to the report, he responded by asking, “Just like Ms. Colette?”
The woman asked her son what he meant, and he recalled Crawford beating him on the bottom with a belt, police said.
The boy’s mother questioned Crawford about the incident, but Crawford denied the accusations, the report states.
Crawford later called the boy’s mother saying she wanted to further explain the situation, police said.
Crawford told the woman she sometimes makes her own children, who are also in the class, open their hands so that she can pop them three times as punishment, the report states.
She explained the boy may have gotten confused after watching her punish another child that way, the report states.
The boy’s mother told police she decided not to return her son to the facility out of concern for his safety.
Crawford turned herself in to authorities this morning for a scheduled bond hearing, Capt. John Grainger said. She was later released on a $1,092.50 personal recognizance bond, he said.
