Rock Hill man gets 18 months in infant’s death
YORK, S.C. -- A Rock Hill man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for the death of his girlfriend's 2-month-old granddaughter last year.
The Herald of Rock Hill reported 58-year-old Roger Bryson pleaded guilty to assault and battery in York on Monday.
Prosecutors say Bryson suffocated Jaylin Chavis while sleeping with her on a loveseat.
Circuit Judge Michael Nettles also ordered Bryson to spend a year on probation after he completes his prison term.
Bryson originally was charged with illegal neglect of a child.
The girl had been placed with her grandmother by the Department of Social Services because the infant had tested positive for drugs when she was born.
The grandmother, Toni Chavis, is also charged with illegal neglect of a child. Her case is pending.
