Haley tells agencies to re-examine policies, regulations
COLUMBIA -- Gov. Nikki Haley said this morning that government needs to get out of the way when it comes to regulating businesses in South Carolina.
“Government is never supposed to slow things down,” the first-term Republican said during a meeting of Cabinet agency leaders.
To that end, Haley signed an executive order this morning ordering the Cabinet agencies — and encouraging those outside her control — to conduct comprehensive reviews of agency regulations, policies, rules and procedures.
The Cabinet agencies are to report back to Haley by May 1, recommending which policies are no longer needed or are overly burdensome and need to be changed.
Haley said the rules and policies pile up because the Legislature often lets them automatically take effect after 180 days instead of examining them.
Haley, along with legislative leaders, also is appointing a regulatory reform task force to examine the issue.
That panel is to issue a report by Nov. 15.
