Summerville council to discuss old armory
SUMMERVILLE — Town Council this morning weighs — yet again — what to do with a half-century old National Guard Armory the town acquired 12 years ago, that needs $2 million or more in repairs.
Ideas have ranged from turning it into an community center to simply razing it and starting over. Town police also are interested in making use of the space.
The armory is part of a recently restored recreational complex in the once-neglected Brownsville community. It sits at Doty Field — the old ball park the town has renovated as a recreation park — and adjacent to the popular Faith Sellers Senior Center, the Dorchester County nonprofit.
The armory building has sentimental value, used for years as a community dance hall.
