Flowertown Festival to include secular humanists
SUMMERVILLE — Secular humanists will have a booth at this year’s Flowertown Festival, despite initially being turned away by the Summerville YMCA.
The YMCA refused at first to provide booth space for the Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry — a group that promotes a “non-theistic” human viewpoint that doesn’t include a deity — because the YMCA is a Christian organization. The YMCA runs the popular annual arts and crafts festival.
The reversal came after the national American Humanist Association told the YMCA in a letter that the rejection “was a violation of state and federal anti-discrimination laws.”
The festival takes place April 5-7 in Azalea Park in Summerville.
