N.C. man going wrong way on U.S. Highway 17 dies in wreck in Awendaw area

A North Carolina man going the wrong way on U.S. Highway 17 in the Awendaw area died in a collision with another vehicle this morning.

He was going north in a southbound lane when he collided with another vehicle about 6:15 a.m. near Old Georgetown Road, according to Charleston County Sheriff’s Maj. Mike Stanley.

David Gibbs, 59, of North Carolina near Wilmington died at the scene, according to the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.

Nobody else was riding with him.

There was no indication that the vehicle had crossed over the grassy median as previously reported, Stanley said.

The driver of the other vehicle, which also had no passengers, was taken to Medical University Hospital with unknown injuries, Stanley said.
